Secondary: The Musical Audience and Media Reviews:
Checkpoint Theatre’s greatly anticipated 2026 season opener was lauded by educators and students from 50 schools, parents, and people of all ages and backgrounds for its incredible authenticity and sensitive yet accurate handling of the complex tensions of the Singapore school experience. Audiences streamed out of every one of the 19 performances with high praise for every element of the production – from the music to the set and costume designs, to the acting and directorial vision, and so much more – and, often, humming snatches from one of the original songs featured in the musical.

“This patient and elegiac look at how the education system treats those who struggle in it asks some tough questions of Singapore’s meritocracy… Secondary: The Musical also asks some very pertinent questions about how youthful idealism withers and dies because of boardroom decisions, and the need for teachers to draw boundaries for self-preservation – and the dangers of doing this by default.”

– The Straits Times

“[Checkpoint Theatre]’s Secondary: The Musical is a phenomenal piece of storytelling. Like the local literature that moves Huxley Secondary School’s Sec 3F, it contains no iambic pentameter but tells stories that all of us have lived and felt and breathed, with such great care and depth and humour. All the characters are so lovingly cared for by the playwright, director and actors. This is why our local theatre is world-class […] Thank you for the absolutely beautiful, breathtaking time in the theatre.”
