[04] Waiting (2026) by Charlotte Chin

Waiting by Charlotte Chin is a mixed-media artwork on cotton canvas, inspired by Checkpoint Theatre’s Occupation (2002).

Charlotte shares:
“The older generation does not like to ruminate on wartime atrocities and suffering. It has left many scars here. My 102-year-old maternal grandmother remains reticent about her life until this day.

So when the team at Checkpoint Theatre gave me an inspirational quote from one of their plays, it was serendipitous that they chose Occupation. This play was first performed by Claire Wong in 2002 and Jo Kukathas in 2012.

Waiting is the title of my work, which is a response to the play. I have in my possession a few cross-stitched items like a tablecloth, handkerchief and toys from my grandmother.

Women were confined to their home, waiting for news of family, friends or a lover. Cross-stitching on scraps of materials, or mending clothes as a form of prayer and meditation to pass the time and keep sane. Peeping through the curtains to get a quick glimpse of life outside.”
